Iittala introduces a new, enchanting world to the Taika collection: Taika Sato

25 May 2024

Iittala introduced Taika, designed by Klaus Haapaniemi, in 2007 and since then it has become one of Iittala’s most beloved and distinctive collections. Around the world, people have been enchanted by the unique way Taika blends intricate art on simple, streamlined shapes. Now Iittala launches a completely new collection with new artwork by Haapaniemi which continues the story of Taika: Taika Sato.

The story of Iittala’s beloved Taika collection continues with the launch of Taika Sato, a collection of tableware and decorative items, in 2024. The new collection features rich and exquisitely detailed artwork by Taika’s designer, Klaus Haapaniemi.

Sato means harvest in Finnish. The pattern design in Taika Sato showcases fruits and vegetables and continues the distinctive style Haapaniemi is known for.

Still life art, botanical drawings and Haapaniemi’s own garden are the inspirations behind Taika Sato’s artwork.

“I wanted to elevate vegetables and fruits in a powerful way that allows the imagination to interpret shapes and colours intuitively. I wanted to make the art ripe and fruitful. The compositions of Taika Sato can be seen as colourful textures or abstract still lifes”, Haapaniemi explains.

The rich blend of colours in Taika Sato include Iittala’s collection colours for 2024: different shades of green and the warm mauve shade of ‘calluna’. These colours are complemented by a vivid array of blue, red, yellow and brown hues.

Each object in the collection features a different artwork with different colours and shapes.

“The pattern design and colours create a universe in which each object is an individual instead of having a repeating pattern on all items of the collection. The objects are distinct individuals, but together they complement each other”, says Haapaniemi.

The collection includes 23 different ceramic items, both tableware and interior items, and a glass tumbler, completed by linen tea towels and paper napkins. The collection includes both familiar shapes and sizes of the Taika collection, such as mugs, plates, bowls, cups, glass tumblers and a serving plate. It also introduces items and shapes that have never been seen before.

The new shapes in the Taika Sato collection are ceramic vases, rectangular plates, smaller 0,3 l mugs and 0,3 l cups with saucer, ceramic chopstick holders and ceramic jars with lids.

The vases have a sculptural, tower-like shape that tapers upwards. They are available in two sizes, a 130x180 mm "three-layered” and a 210x150 mm "two-layered" shape.

The rectangular plates come in two sizes, a square and a rectangle. They’re versatile pieces that can be part of the table setting, used for serving or as decorative items ideal for displaying small trinkets like jewellery.

Ceramic chopstick holders add charming detail to table settings and are perfect little gift items. The jars are very detailed both in style and shape which make them ideal for serving or as decorative items.

The cups come in highly desired shapes in the Taika range. The smaller 0,3 l mugs and the 0,3 l cups with 16 cm saucers are ideal for coffee, tea and other hot beverages

Taika (Finnish for “magic”) has established itself as one of Iittala’s most beloved series around the world. Its highly distinctive artwork tells stories that take the imagination to the secrets of Finnish folklore and wild Nordic nature.

The rich style of Haapaniemi's pattern design combined with the streamlined and simplified shapes of the collection's items designed by another Finnish designer, Heikki Orvola, create a timeless and fascinating collection. All other shapes in the collection are by Orvola, but the shapes of the new vases and jars are designed by Haapaniemi himself.

Taika was a success immediately after its launch and has since found a devoted audience of collectors and also new fans.
