BAROSSA’S FINEST WINES GO UNDER THE HAMMER FOR $294,882 AT AUSTRALIA’S HOME OF FINE WINE, LANGTONS

01 Jul 2023

Last Thursday, Australia’s most prestigious fine wine destination, LANGTONS, hosted their highly anticipated live auction event, hosted in collaboration with the globally renowned wine region, Barossa Australia. Guests were guided through the evening by host, Melissa Leong, at Crown Sydney where paddles were raised in support of The Barossa Australia Well-Being Fund, a foundation that aims to better provide the wine region with mental health support. The crowd were treated to an exclusive preview of LANGTONS new branding that will be formally unveiled over coming weeks, complemented by a vinous tasting journey and the entertainment of a fine wine auction. The evening showcased 34 exceptional lots of rare and grand Barossan wine, generously contributed from prestigious producers, ranging from $1,652 to a final hammer figure of $40,120, reflecting the impeccable provenance and rarity of the wines curated by LANGTONS.

“The Barossa auction is curated with highly desirable, collectable, cannot buy anywhere on the general market. Many of the wines we saw last night were large format and collectors love large format for two reasons - you cannot readily find them anywhere, they have come direct from the wineries and they last a long time.” - Tamara Grishy, Managing Director LANGTONS

Originating as an auction house for specialist wines, LANGTONS is trusted for their expertise and specialist knowledge, going above and beyond to secure exclusive, limited and rare fine wine. The secondary market for Barossa Valley wines in Australia has reached unprecedented strength, supporting trends of greater investments in higher-priced wines noted by the International Wine and Spirit Record. All profits raised by LANGTONS from the Barossan lots will go to the The Barossa Australia Well-Being Fund.

“The thirst for Barossan wine, traditional and contemporary, manifests as buoyant sales well exceeding the reserve prices for almost every lot.” - Ned Goodwin, LANGTONS Master of Wine

Barossan wines, including the finest bottlings from Penfolds, Henschke, and Rockford, command clearance rates exceeding 85%. These illustrious wines consistently achieve stratospheric auction hammer prices, exemplified by the evenings highest bidding figure of $40,120 for Penfolds Block 42 Kalimna Cabernet Sauvignon 2004 Imperial.

LANGTONS, Australia’s largest fine wine auction market with unwavering support from their partners, including Coravin, Vintec, Saltram Wines, Crown Sydney and Riedel, allowing a seamless experience that united international collectors and connoisseurs. LANGTONS unique and specialised industry knowledge is reflected in the luxurious execution of their events, with host for the evening Melissa Leong commenting, “What’s better than a live wine auction? A live wine auction for charity! LANGTONS

not only know how to source the world’s finest and rarest wines, but they know how to throw one helluva shindig to raise money for a worthy cause. What a way to celebrate some of the best heritage vinous produce our country has to offer (aka. the Barossa), in style. It was a privilege to MC such a night.“

The Barossa Australia Fine Wine Auction proved to be a milestone event, with a collective sales figure of $294,882, making the evening a testament to the enduring allure and investment potential of the Barossa Valley wines. By entertaining the most engaged and affluent wine collectors globally, LANGTONS continued to elevate their unique ecosystem which has grown strength to strength over the past 30 years.
