Sydney’s art world is about to witness a debut that has long been anticipated. Internationally acclaimed artist Benjamin Shine, known globally for his ethereal tulle portraits and innovative manipulation of materials, unveils his first Sydney exhibition, 3FOLD.
Shine’s reputation precedes him: collaborations with Beyoncé, Chloe x Halle, Givenchy under Riccardo Tisci, and Maison Margiela with John Galliano have cemented his work on the world stage. His medium — a single length of tulle folded, twisted and layered into haunting portraits — has been described as both otherworldly and ingenious. Yet with 3FOLD, Sydney audiences will see a bold new side to Shine.
Anchored by two of his iconic tulle pieces, the exhibition introduces striking new works in resin, metal and mixed textiles. Each reveals the artist’s obsession with the fold as both method and metaphor. “It all stems with the simple fold,” Shine explains. “Whether painting with layered tulle, creating resin-infused felt sculptures, or achieving gravity-defying forms in metal, I wanted to show the different creative opportunities afforded by each material.”
Across three prestigious Sydney venues — Art2Muse Gallery in Woollahra, The Intercontinental Sydney Double Bay, and Fairfax & Roberts in the CBD — 3FOLD expands Shine’s reputation for fusing craftsmanship with emotional resonance. From delicate and ethereal compositions to commanding sculptural statements, the works chart his evolution into an ever-expanding language of form and transformation.
For collectors, curators and the culturally curious, 3FOLD offers a rare chance to experience Shine’s artistic journey in person. With public access from October 9 to 20, including an exclusive “Meet the Artist” session on October 11, Sydney is set to become the stage for one of contemporary art’s most compelling creative voices.
