Christian Louboutin x Otis Carey: Where Craft, Colour and Cultural Narrative Converge

04 May 2025

In a compelling meeting of vision and craft, Christian Louboutin collaborates with Australian surfer and painter Otis Carey to present a series of menswear and womenswear pieces that channel movement, memory, and material precision. Carey's Indigenous heritage and intuitive sense of patterning form a natural dialogue with Louboutin’s commitment to form, finish, and visual identity.

The Toile Enduite Gaagal print—named after the word for “ocean” in Carey’s native language—features prominently across select styles. On the Louis sneaker and the Miss Z collection, it appears as layered brushwork on cotton canvas, protected by a water-repellent coating that preserves the raw integrity of the artwork while adding functional wearability.

In the men's collection, refinement comes through surface detail: rhinestones and polished studs embellish Gaagal Couture styles crafted in silk crepe satin, while leather in wave-like compositions defines the Moc College Gaagal and Mule College Gaagal. These pieces offer an understated complexity, rich in texture and context.

The Miss Z Otis Carey range applies Carey's visual rhythm to mules, pumps and boots, each screen-printed to evoke the hand-painted nature of his practice. The addition of hand-set crystals in Gaggal Sphere and Gaggal Strass highlights the maison’s atelier-level attention to embellishment, giving each silhouette a distinct character. Other designs, such as the Viva Condora mule and Bubble line, play with new transparencies and contours, bringing a fresh lightness to the brand’s signature aesthetic.

The accessories carry the same clarity of design. The Otis Waves tote reinterprets marine motion through laser-cut leather, while the Funky Weekender blends practicality and statement with studded detailing. The Gaagal-printed Eloise bag rounds out the conversation, where technique and narrative exist in equal balance.

This collaboration doesn’t seek contrast—it finds cohesion. Otis Carey’s fluid visual language meets Christian Louboutin’s sharp design sensibility in pieces that are expressive, tactile and contemporary. From line to surface, from pattern to cut, each creation reflects a shared pursuit of refinement, storytelling and material beauty.
