NON Presents Mama, Why the Butterflies? A Mesmerising Dance Journey Premiering This January

23 Jan 2025

Prepare to be captivated by Sydney's most innovative dance company, The New The Old The Now (NON), as they return to the Entertainment Quarter with their latest production, Mama, Why the Butterflies? Premiering on 30 January 2025, this new work from acclaimed choreographer Davide Di Giovanni promises to be an unforgettable exploration of time and the human condition.

Following their sold-out debut season, NON takes their pioneering vision to new heights with a performance that transcends the boundaries of traditional dance. Set against the stark industrial backdrop of the Entertainment Quarter car park, Mama, Why the Butterflies? transforms this brutalist setting into a cinematic stage where the human form becomes a poetic meditation on existence.

Through Di Giovanni’s masterful choreography and direction, the performance weaves vivid filmic imagery with raw, primal emotion, inviting audiences to actively participate in the interpretation of its rich narrative. Known for his love of cinema, Di Giovanni blurs the lines between dance and film, creating a powerful new art form that resonates deeply with human connection and imagination.

The production features a remarkable cast spanning ages 20 to 74, showcasing the full spectrum of the human story through movement. Co-director and performer Chloe Leong, whose artistry has been instrumental in shaping this piece, brings both grace and vulnerability to the stage. The technical brilliance of Iohna Loots, formerly of the Royal Ballet, contrasts beautifully with the fresh energy of emerging talent Malachi Sylvester, creating a compelling interplay that defines NON’s signature style.

With Mama, Why the Butterflies?, NON delivers a poignant and innovative masterpiece that invites audiences to experience dance in an entirely new way. Don’t miss the opportunity to witness this extraordinary production.
