The Macallan brings its 200th anniversary celebrations to a close with a magnificent gesture: the release of A Night on Earth in Jerez de la Frontera. As the third expression in the A Night on Earth series, this single malt Scotch whisky is a tribute to Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, where The Macallan’s storied journey with sherry-seasoned oak casks begins.
Crafted from a harmonious blend of European and American sherry-seasoned oak casks, this limited-edition whisky captures the spirit of togetherness and festivity that defines the end-of-year celebrations. The tasting notes evoke the traditions of Jerez, from the anise and pastry flavours inspired by Pestiños—a traditional local treat—to the sweetness of grapes, recalling Spain’s custom of eating twelve grapes at midnight to welcome the New Year.
This release not only embodies the essence of the season but also the heritage of The Macallan. Collaborating with artist María Melero, a native of Jerez, the packaging reflects the vibrancy of the region. Melero’s designs transform the unboxing into a visual journey, featuring imagery of a crimson sky, sherry vineyards, and the roses that protect the vines. Inside, the story continues with depictions of azulejos, traditional tiles adorned with motifs of casks, stills, and vine leaves, celebrating Jerez’s traditions and The Macallan’s enduring connection to this region.
Steven Bremner, Whisky Maker at The Macallan, shared his insights: “Jerez plays a crucial role in The Macallan’s past, but also present and future. A combination of European and American sherry-seasoned casks has enabled us to capture the flavours, traditions, and María’s memories of New Year in Jerez de la Frontera, the home of sherry wine.”
A Night on Earth in Jerez follows the footsteps of its predecessors in the series, including the first release inspired by Scottish shortbread and the second, A Night on Earth The Journey, influenced by rice popcorn vendors and sweet steamed rice pudding. Each whisky tells a story, and this final release beautifully encapsulates the warmth and traditions of Jerez, making it the ultimate gift for the festive season.
