DEFENDER MARKS 70 YEARS OF ITS LANDMARK HUMANITARIAN CHARITY PARTNERSHIP WITH BRITISH RED CROSS

14 Aug 2024

For over 70 years, Defender has been more than just a vehicle; it has been a symbol of strength, adaptability, and unwavering support in some of the world’s most challenging terrains. This year marks a significant milestone in the enduring partnership between Defender and the British Red Cross, one of the longest-standing charity collaborations globally. Since the first Series Land Rover entered service with the Red Cross in 1954, Defender has played a pivotal role in humanitarian efforts across the globe, embodying the spirit of resilience that both the brand and the Red Cross stand for.

In 2024, this partnership reaches new heights as Defender celebrates its legacy by continuing to support communities in crisis. A testament to this is the latest Defender 130 emergency response vehicle, handed over to the Italian Red Cross. This vehicle is not just a mode of transportation; it’s a lifeline, equipped with advanced satellite communications technology to ensure that relief efforts are never compromised, even in the most remote or disaster-stricken areas.

The Australian connection to this global partnership is also profound. Since 2014, Defender has stood by the Australian Red Cross, aiding in disaster recovery and emergency services across the continent. From the bushfires and floods that have ravaged New South Wales to the ongoing support for remote communities, Defender's presence has been a beacon of hope during Australia's toughest times.

As the Australian Red Cross celebrates its 110th anniversary, the partnership's impact is visible across the nation. Up to 50 landmarks and selected Defender retailers will light up in red, a tribute to the lives touched by the Red Cross and the enduring collaboration with Defender. This illumination symbolizes the commitment of both organizations to continue providing vital assistance to those in need, now and for generations to come.

Defender’s partnership with the Red Cross extends far beyond the borders of Australia. From disaster resilience programs in Nepal to search and rescue operations in Italy, and support for disaster relief efforts in Morocco, Defender is an active participant in six key international projects. These initiatives, rooted in the shared values of resilience and service, have positively impacted over two million lives in more than 50 countries.

Mark Cameron, Managing Director of Defender, encapsulates the essence of this partnership: “The long-standing relationship between Defender and the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement shows what can be achieved when working together with a lasting commitment. Our partnership has become part of our DNA, and together, we provide vital assistance for humanity, often in the harshest of conditions.”

As the world continues to face new challenges, from climate change to food insecurity and conflict, the Defender-Red Cross partnership remains as relevant and necessary as ever. With a fleet that has been there for communities during hurricanes, pandemics, and beyond, Defender continues to be a reliable partner in the Red Cross's mission to alleviate human suffering worldwide.
