Far away, on the other side of the world, in the heat of the forests of Central America, grows a treasure so rare, it sometimes only blooms every 20 years. A unique nighttime event, a rare flower begins to open, just as the moon takes rise. At the heart of the dark night, bathed in the light of the moon, the Moonlight flower reveals its smooth, white petals highlighted with reflections of gold. The plant’s other name, Selenicereus Grandifloris, recalls the link this cactus flower has with the Moon Goddess Selena, as well as the full dimension of its corolla which can reach 40cm in diameter. The Moonlight flower is now grown in France. 6000 m2 are dedicated to this flower, grown in-ground, with the utmost respect for the plant, at a controlled temperature of 3°C. For the last 15 years, this extraordinary plant has drawn all its beauty from the soil in Brittany, under the constant attention of botanists who are watching over it, masters of an exclusive savoir-faire. Patience is needed to witness the blossoming of the Moonlight flower, which takes place when the moon is out. From it, the secret to youth is carefully extracted. It is watched over, sometimes for nights on end, until its petals unfold majestically and the air takes on a delicious vanilla scent.
At that moment, patience gives way to agility because these precious flowers are harvested over a 2-hour timeframe only, when they reach their height of beauty and molecular richness.
Then it’s a race against the clock so the flowers do not diminish. As soon as they are picked, they immediately undergo an ultra-cold process at -196°C. This fundamental step literally freezes their fragile molecules which will later be extracted without using any type of solvent.
